Big Quasar Update
It’s been such a long time since we posted any content about Quasar. We’ve been so busy with working on the game that we’ve completely neglected posting any kind of updates about the game! So what have we done since our post way back at the start of November? First and foremost over the course of November and December we conducted multiple external play tests with students at two of the local colleges here in Toronto and the game was well received. We’ve got a lot of work to do but in general people had a lot of fun playing the game.
One of the things we did come to realize though is that the game needed something other than just shooting each other and flying around.
We decided that the game needed an ability system, and each ship class would have access to certain abilities. As of the time of writing we have three abilities; Tractor Beam, EMP, and Warp. Below is a quick clip of the Tractor Beam and EMP in action from our most recent internal play test.
The environment has also been a focus of ours recently. In the clip above the asteroids also have some life to them now with a very slight rotation to them. The bigger addition to the environment though is the planets in the background. The world is really starting to come to life for us.
There are three other additions all visible in the clip linked in this post.
First is the new HUD. The radar and the icons displayed on it that notify the player of a foe or power up have changed, and they move a small amount closer or further from the center of the screen depending on distance to the player.
Second is the ship banking depending on rotation speed. It’s still very buggy but it’s a neat effect, especially when the player has an active power up.
Last but not least is a new weapon, the Rail Gun. In the clip above it’s the blue energy that is firing at a slower rate. It’s rate of fire is much smaller than the Laser but it packs a much heavier punch.
We’ve been far too relaxed about posting in the last few months and it’s something we’re going to try to be much better at from this point forward.
That’s it for this week! Have a Happy Valentines and check back next week when we detail just how arena generation works!
