Duetoxplode aka. Josh Kay

I’m Duetoxplode (Due-to-xplode) and a Software Engineer at OSnap! Games.  I still have no idea if I actually like this handle at all.  Apparently nobody has any idea how to say it.  I’ve used it since I was twelve and never bothered to change it.

I recently graduated from George Brown College with a Game Programming diploma.  I began my time here as an intern, and have since climbed the ranks.  This is my first real step into the industry and I have enjoyed every second of it.

Name 5 of your favourite games:

  1. Rocket League is one of the few games that I find time for now.  It does an awesome job of catering to new players, while still maintaining a high skill cap.  Nothing is more gratifying than scoring an aerial goal.  Unfortunately no one else here will ever understand that satisfaction.  Wow! Wow! Wow!

  2. Overwatch has taken its toll on my work and my sanity.  Its character design along with its overall aesthetic combine to make a unique experience.  Every time I play I seem to find a new character that enjoy.  It’s high noon.

  3. NHL series is always something that I’ve loved.  It combines both of my passions, hockey and video games.  What more could I ask for?  The revamped control scheme in NHL 07 was the best thing to happen to the franchise.  I don’t think I’ve missed out on a game since then.

  4. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive cures my desire for competition.  I never played any of the CS games very much until GO.  I spent the majority of my time playing matchmaking and trying to improve my play along with my rank.  I loved that the skill cap was incredibly high and that meant there was always room to improve.

  5. Fallout 3 is one of the few RPGs that I have sunk a lot of time into.  I’m not really sure what drew me into this game to be honest.  Dogmeat was pretty awesome.  Exploring the large world and finding new loot always kept me busy.  I still can’t believe that I got every achievement in that game.  I’m not sure if that’s something to be proud of.

Is there a specific moment or reason that lead you to wanting to build games?

Not really… I’ve always enjoyed video games and got a taste for programming in high school.  After I graduated, I struggled to find something that I enjoyed doing.  I stumbled upon game programming one night and it just kind of stuck.  I’ve loved it ever since.

Who is your favourite game character and why?

I don’t really have a good answer for this question.  One thing that comes to mind is the Zergling from Starcraft 2.  Cheesing your opponent with an early 6 pool is always a fun thing to do.  Lings are an essential part of a lot of Zerg army compositions and are one of the defining units of the race.  Seeing a flood of Zerglings flooding your base is an awful feeling if you aren’t prepared.  Nothing can swarm enemies like they do.

What is your favourite weapon from any video game?

This has to be the AK-47 from CS:GO.  The ability to one-tap enemies in the head with a precisely aimed shot feels amazing.  The AK gives you that, without compromising close range combat.  Although the spray pattern is hard to control, it is deadly once learned.  Apart from these things, the gun just feels amazing to use.

Favourite or most epic moment in your gaming history?

Before WarZ was overtaken by hackers and abandoned by developers, it was a fun game to play.  I was playing with my friend, Thunderstein, one day and we found a group of 4 or 5 players walking around geared from head to toe.  We went prone in two bushes next to a giant tree and waited for them to come close.  On the count of 3 we both emptied our clips into them and wiped them out.  Our characters were fully decked out from that point on.
